What is MBBS?

MBBS full form is Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.

An MBBS course is an undergraduate medical degree awarded to students who have completed their training in the field of medicine and surgery. The MBBS degree is recognized in many countries as the standard qualification for medical doctors and physicians.

MBBS is the dream career choice for students across India. Over 18 lakh candidates aspire to pursue an MBBS course as per the latest data. The MBBS is a professional degree required to practise Medicine, diagnose ailments, give medication, and perform surgery. There are approximately 1,06,948 MBBS seats available, with 55,468 (52%) being government seats and 50,689 (48%) being private seats.

To be eligible for the NEET, students must have passed their Class 12 in the PCB stream (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and be over the age of 17.

MBBS Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria in order to qualify for studying MBBS subjects.  

    • The minimum mark criterion may vary, but overall applicants must have received at least 50% in the intermediate test. 
    • Applicants must pass NEET in order to be admitted to the MBBS programme. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the National Eligibility Cumulative Entrance Test (NEET) which is India’s sole entrance exam for admission to medical programmes. The exam is given once a year in an offline format and duration of exam is three hours and twenty minutes.
    • Applicants must have completed at least Class 12 with the required disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
    • The minimum percentage for candidates to be considered for the reserved category is 40%.

MBBS Entrance Exam 2024

  • The MBBS admission process takes place in two stages. To get admission to the MBBS course in India, a student needs to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). In fact, this is the only entrance test to get admission to the MBBS course and is accepted by both government and private institutions.

    Candidates who meet the NEET cutoff will qualify to participate in the counselling process, which is conducted in two types. The national-level counselling for MBBS is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) seats. The State Medical Admission Authorities conduct counselling for 85 per cent of State Quota seats.
